What are Kerbs
Kerbs are road furniture used to perform the following functions:-
- They define the edge of traffic lanes, traffic Island and footways during both day and night
- They support pavements and structures so that edge break-up is avoided
- They protect adjacent areas from encroachment by vehicle
- They assist in drainage of the carriageway
Types of Kerbs and Their Applications
The main type of Kerbs and their applications are;-
1. Barrier Kerbs
The barrier kerbs are used to provide protection of footways, traffic islands and traffic signs
2. Semi - Mounted Kerbs
Are used in defining and protecting the edges of the carriageway and traffic islands at intersections
3. Mountable Kerbs
These kerbs are used to define traffic island and road edges in urban areas and rural situations where their is high risk of the kerbs being hit by vehicles
4. Kerbs with Integral Drain
Provides proper drainage and it reduces risk of water penetration into the edge of the pavement
